He was
born in the village of Tambulkhana in Faridpur district. Although his full name
is Jasim Uddin Mollah, he is known as Jasim Uddin. His father's name is Ansar
Uddin Mollah and mother's name is Amina Khatun. His poem 'Kabar' is an
unforgettable contribution to Bengali literature. ‘Nakshi Kanthar Math’ is the
best work of the poet which has been translated into different languages.
Jasimuddin's
father was a school teacher by profession. Jasim Uddin studied at Faridpur
Welfare School and later at Faridpur District School. From here he passed the
entrance examination in 1921. He received his B.A. from Calcutta University. A.
And m. A. He completed it in 1929 and 1931 respectively. In 1933 he was at
Calcutta University. Ramtanu Lahiri joined as a research assistant under Dinesh
Chandra Sen. Then in 1936 he joined Dhaka University as a lecturer in Bangla.
His
published books are Kavyagrantha-Rakhali (1928), Nakshi Kanthar Math (1929),

Yeh Janani Kande (1973), Halud Barani (198), Jale Lekhan ( 1979), Shroud
procession (1968). The plays written by the poet are - Padmapar (1950),

Poet
Jasimuddin received various awards and honors for his contribution to Bengali
literature. These include President's Award for Pride of Performance 1958,
Ekushey Padak 198, Independence Day Award 198 (posthumously). In 1974, he
refused the Bangla Academy Award. In 1969, Rabindra Bharati University
conferred the honorary degree of D.Litt on the poet.
Jasimuddin,
a village poet, died on 13 March 1986 in Dhaka. He was later buried in his own
village Gobindpur.
