Shefali Ghosh, the legendary artist of Chittagong, has proved the fact that songs composed in the regional language of Chittagong are capable of language not only to the people of Chittagong, but also to the people of the country and the world. This extraordinary artist has easily won the hearts of millions of listeners through his kakta and singing style. He left with a mortal body, but the countless songs he left behind will be cherished from generation to generation for eternity. We find him everyday in the midst of his songs. As long as there is tide in Karnafuli, there will be currents.

Artist Shefali Ghosh was born on 11 January 1941 in Kanungopara village of Boalkhali upazila of Chittagong. Shefali, the cherished daughter of father Krishna Gopal Ghosh and mother Ashalata Ghosh, has been fond of music since childhood. He started learning music on his own as a teenager. Chalk in hand to Ustad Tejen Sen. Then Ustad Nirad Baran Barandaya, Sangeetacharya Jagdananda Barandaya, Abdul Gafur Hali, Mihir Lala, Gopal Krishna Chowdhury, Henry Gilbert, Syed Anwar Mufti, Anwar Parvez, M, N Akhtar, Syed Mohiuddin, M, A Kashem accompanied by Talim. Although Shefali Ghosh gained fame by singing various songs like Bhajan-Kirtan, Maizbhandari, Desh Gaan etc. on stage, radio and TV, he climbed to the top of popularity by singing regional songs of Chittagong. In association with artist Shyamsunder Bainchab, she has sung numerous regional songs at home and abroad and has achieved skyrocketing fame as a queen of regional songs.

Shefali Ghosh was listed on the radio in 1973-74. He first performed regional songs on TV in 1970. He sang the song 'Ore Sampanwala' in the inaugural program of BTV in 1978 and garnered rave reviews.

In 1986, London-based Milfa Limited released 10 audio cassettes and longplay of his songs. He has 20-25 gramophone discs. He has sung about two thousand songs. He has numerous audio-VCD cassettes in the market.

Shefali Ghosh has acted in about 21 films. Bashundhara, Manihar, Sampanwala, Malkabana, Matir Manush, Swami, Manner Manush, Bargi Elo Deshe etc. are notable. If I could get a beautiful face, my dear friend, you have made me more popular with songs like Karlire Diwana, Natin Borai Kha, Surya Udelle Bhai Lalmari, O Manure Sundar Manu, O Paranar Talat Bhai, Ki Jbala Di Gela More, Koiljar Vitar Bandhi Raikhkhum Toyare etc.

Artist Shefali Ghosh was honored by many organizations / institutions during his lifetime including the posthumous state 'Ekushey Padak'. At the invitation of expatriate Bengalis, he sang in different countries of the world including America, England, France, Oman, Qatar, Jordan, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, India. On December 31, 2006, the life of this famous artist was extinguished. The proud artist of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra was given a guard of honor and his birthplace was buried at Kanungopara.

In order to preserve the memory of artist Shefali Ghosh and Shyamsunder Vaishnavism and to showcase their achievements to the new generation, Retirement Cultural Group Chittagong has organized a colorful commemorative and cultural competition every year to commemorate their death anniversary. Chittagong Academy has also published a research memoir edited by Principal Anwara Alam on the lives and works of two renowned artists.
